Home-Made Hummus + Pita Wraps

When I am sitting down to a Sunday beer or just relaxing with mates, I've got a go-to snack that the lads love. They're happy to rip me about it - "Jase, mate let's just gets some chips or some crackers and cheese"

But when I blend up this simple, little dip and throw it on the table with some pita bread and green olives, the troops dive in!

Home-Made Nut Granola

As we come into summer, we start to move away from hot breakfasts. I always find my hunger drops when it's hot and that's the main reason I tend to be leanest at that festive end of the year! That's despite the beers!

So rather than egg-based breakfasts, I love moving toward cold options like chia bowls or granola and yoghurt. Yet the issue is that many commercial options are loaded with refined sugar and are not that healthy.

With that in mind, I've put together an awesome, tasty and simple Home-Made Nut Granola recipe just in time for summer.

Banana Pancakes

If you like pancakes, this recipe is your friend. It makes delicious, tender and fluffy pancakes and takes only minutes to make.

My favourite topping is a drizzle of maple syrup and a tonne of sliced strawberries. And if you want to get fancy, a sprinkle of muesli, coconut and cacao sends the taste and sexiness through the roof.

Easy Green Smoothie

Smoothie's have become the rage for healthy types but are they really healthy? Well, the short answer is 'yes' but it is absolutely conditional on how you make them. Firstly, the primary ingredients of your smoothie need to be vegetables. Veggies contain loads of fibre, vitamins and water and not much sugar. As such, they are not as calorie-dense as smoothies based on fruit.

Second, you need to make the smoothie up on a low-calorie liquid like coconut water or even plain water. Adding juices or full-cream milk will send the caloric density through the roof. Of course there will be plenty of nutrition in the smoothie but from a caloric point of view, you may as well be drinking Coke.

San Choi Bau

Here's a real favourite of mine! Super-cheap, quick and easy to make. The perfect Thursday night meal.

But instead of the fat-laden Chinese fried style, try my healthy san choy bau recipe. It's messy, juicy and will spill over the place. But when you start munching it down, happy days will be upon you!

Seafood Marinara

This is a Sunday special and will go down a treat with a glass of wine! I've substituted regular white pasta with black bean spaghetti which is loads higher in protein and fibre. I love the texture of bean pastas and I've got to say, the black pasta looks delicious when served with a tomato sauce. Try this one tonight!

Baked Salmon and Stir Fry Green

If you live in a small apartment, cooking fish can be a pain in the butt. It’ll leave your house smelling like a co-op and your clothes smelling even worse!

Baking salmon instead of grilling it on the hotplate is the answer. No smoke, no smells, grand taste!

BUT, remember this little tip! Once the fillet is cooked evenly through at about 180-200 degrees (usually 12-15 mins), flick the knob around to grill on high. After two mins, flip the fillet over and give it the same time on the reverse side. This will both crisp up the skin and brown off the fillet and the result is delicious!

Pink fish like salmon and trout is super-high in Omega-3 healthy heart fats and lean protein. Whether you’re looking to pack on muscle or trim down on body fat, salmon with either a summer salad or some wintery veggies is the perfect plan!

Chicken and Vegetable Soup

You know those cold Winter nights… it’s been pouring rain all day and there’s no sign of it going away. All you really want is that comfort meal to warm you up.

Well I’ve been running this Chicken and Veggie Soup for the last 15 years and it works every time to bring on that feeling of heartiness.

Loaded with fibrous veggies and very low in fat, it’s really filling, hight in protein but low in kilojoules. This makes your perfect rainy day meal and takes only 30 mins easy cooking with whip up. And the best part? There will be plenty left over for lunch the next few days!

Do yourself a favour and try this one tonight! JS

Vietnamese Pho

Ok, if there is one thing I am addicted to right now, it's Vietnamese beef pho. This aromatic, bone broth soup has become super-popular in Western cultures because of its suggested health benefits. Me personally, pho bo is my go-to, cheap mid-week meal when I can't be bothered cooking.

Whereas Chinese food leaves you feeling average afterward because of its heaviness and grease, I love the fact that you can be completely pho-bloated yet two hours later, you're light as a feather.

This is not the meal to cook if you are in a hurry as a delicious pho is dependant on a patiently, slow-cooked base where the bones and spices have plenty of time to infuse the broth. So with a good few hours to spare while working, I decided to give my own pho bo a shot! Delicious!!

Breakky Stack

I’m getting to the point where going out for breakfast is losing its value! Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my coffee dates. Yet the thought of paying $20pp for a brekky that I can whip up at home for the same price or less for three people seems damned.

Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day because you can load up knowing you’re going to spend the rest of the day burning it off. This brekky stack isn’t a meal I’d have most mornings but it would be a weekend special on most weekends. I bloody love it!

Give it a try as it’s as simple as pie!

Lamb Shanks - Like No Other!

LAMB SHANKS, LAMB SHANKS, LAMB SHANKS!

Is it just me or are these not the tastiest things on the planet?

To be fair, I'm probably releasing this meal at at the wrong end of the season for our Aussie followers but hey, who'd begrudge being served up this dish tonight?

That slow-oven roast leaves the meat falling off the bone. Served up with some corn, green beans, brown rice and smothered with the veggie-ridden saucy stew, we're in heaven.

Now you might be thinking "but is this really a fitting recipe to promote as healthy?" Well the answer to that is 'yes'.

  • The shanks have had all of the visible, 'trimmable' fat removed;
  • The cooking method uses very little fat and what is there is olive oil;
  • There is a tonne of veggies included in the meal.

Lamb shanks themselves as a cut, are a very high source of protein, zinc and vitamin B!

And I am guessing you've never cooked them because you thought they were beyond your skill level? THINK AGAIN - this recipe is as simple as it gets!
